James Buchanan was known as “Old Buck”, and was the first unmarried President to be elected. His niece, Harriet Lane, acted as officlal White House hostess. Mr. Buchanan was a Presbyterian, a Lawyer and Democrat. An eye defect caused Mr. Buchanan to tilt his head from side to side when he spoke. There was a plot to kidnap the President and replace him with Mr. Breckinridge, but the plan was never carried out. It did however become common for rumors of kidnap to circulate during President Abraham Lincoln’s term.
