Martin Van Buren, our 8th President, was the first President born in the United States. Van Buren was a Democrat, a laywer, went to Kinderhook Academy, and was known as the “Little Magician.” He spoke Dutch and popularized the colloquial term “O.K”–he often referred to his hometown of Kinderhook, New York, as “Old Kinderhook” or “O.K”, which later meant “all right.” Van Buren was a mere 5′6″ tall and in order to appear slimmer, he was speculated to wear a corset in his latter years. He was plagued by gout and asthma.
