Known as “Old Rough and Ready”, Taylor was an Episcopalian, Whig, and soldier with no formal education. Taylor often had to keep one eye closed to prevent double vision. Taylor was the second cousin of James Madison (our 4th President). Taylor died in office and there was a conspiracy involving his death and poisoning–his body was later exhumed and traces of arsenic were found in him, but to such a minimal degree that foul play was disregarded.
