Eli Bowen was born in 1844 and performed as a talented acrobat. His lack of legs did not hinder his act, but only aided in his miraculous strength and agility. He joined the famous Barnum and Bailey circus and continued to tour throughout Europe. He eventually married, had five children, and retired in California.
