The Flea Circus emerged in the early 19th century and became a significant part of circuses and sideshows by the early 20th century. Most of the acts were merely an illusion and consisted of mechanical contraptions that simulated activity. However, real fleas have been known to be harnessed and appear to be ‘trained’.
