This painting was inspired from an advertisement in the Pittsfield Sun (December, 27, 1849). In the advertisement, Old Dr. Jacob Townsend gives a critical commentary regarding “wilful, wicked misrepresentations” of his healing tonic. Part of the ad reads: “Old Dr. Townsend is now about 70 years of age, and has long been known as the AUTHOR and DISCOVERER of the GENUINE ORIGINAL , “TOWNSEND SARSAPARILLA.” Being poor, he was compelled to think his manufacture by which means it has been kept out of market, and the sales circumscribed to whose only who had proved its worth, and known its value.”
