During the 19th century, circuses were one of the most popular forms of entertainment. The competition was extremely fierce and advertisements often enticed customers by using large fonts, simple woodcuts, and outrageous claims. An advertisement from the Chicago Tribune (September 1, 1863) describes Melville’s Great Australian Circus featuring Henry Cooke’s “Mammoth Troupe of Performing Dogs and Monkeys”–which managed to attract a crowd for a mere 25 cents.
